About
Walnuts
Walnuts are grown all over the world both for their fruit and for the timber
from their tree. Like other tree nuts, walnuts are an essential part of
a healthy diet. Since ancient times, walnuts have been widely used for their
beneficial effects on digestion, appetite and blood pressure and as antiseptic
for skin afflictions. Recently, modern medical studies have demonstrated
that eating 150 grams of walnuts weekly reduces the risk for heart disease
by 30- 50 %. This is due to the fact that walnuts are cholesterol free like
all other tree nuts, and their fat content is primarily mono or polyunsaturated.
Moreover, walnuts are rich sources of protein, phytochemicals, vitamin B6,
vitamin E and of the minerals iron, zinc, copper, magnesium, phosphorous
and potassium. Walnuts are widely used in the food industry in the chocolate,
bakery and confectionery sectors. |
