Hazelnut Production in Turkey
The Black Sea Region's ideal climatic and soil conditions have made Turkey the largest grower and exporter of hazelnuts, providing over 70 % of the world supply.
400,000 farmers in the Black Sea Region are engaged in hazelnut growth over a total area of 600,000 hectares. The hazelnut economy directly and indirectly supports 8 million people in Turkey.
Turkey exports natural and processed hazelnut kernels to more than 50 countries. Over 70 % of Turkey's exports are shipped to EU countries, among them Germany leading with 45 %. While natural kernels make up the majority of Turkey's exports, the share of processed hazelnuts are steadily increasing with new investments.

    Health Benefits
High in essential vitamins and minerals, fiber and protein, and one of the best nut sources of monounsaturated fats, hazelnuts offer a desirable nutritional profile. Numerous medical studies indicate that hazelnuts lower significantly the risk of heart disease because their fat content is primarily monounsaturated. Hazelnuts are also rich in antioxidants such as vitamin E and selenium. In recent studies, these appear to reduce the risk for cardiovascular disease and certain cancers.

    Applications
Hazelnut praline and roasted hazelnuts are most commonly used in chocolate, dairy, bakery, cereal and confectionery products.
